The bureau Régence is substantially similar to the bureau plat under Louis XIV. It comprises four markedly curved legs, as well as a row of three drawers, of which the central drawer is a little more recessed. This bureau plat is typically crafted in blackened pear wood, enhanced with marquetry and gilt bronzes on the handles and locks.
Topped with espagnolettes, the legs of the bureau Régence are arched and end in a foot, deer hoof or claw foot. With consummate refinement, this desk sometimes includes five panelled drawers, including one in the centre. Its plateau may be covered by leather held in place by moulding.
