A very fine pair of Louis XV giltwood marquises signed N.HEURTAUT.
Nicolas Heurtaut, received as master the 22 of August 1753
Paris, circa 1760
Nicolas Heurtaut (1720-1771) one of the most famous parisian seat maker, and the master of the Louis XV seats, has signed this very comfortable pair of marquises.
This type of very comfortable large bergère was very fashionable during the second part of 18th century, and was not produced by a single workshop. Similar seats signed by other craftmen are recorded in public and private collection, such as the very similar pair of Louis XV marquises housed in the the Marquis de Contades collection at Montgeoffroy castle, or the Louis XV marquise exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris in 1956 during "Grand Ébénistes et Menuisiers Parisiens du XVIIIe siècle" (reproduced in the catalogue N°85 / plate 78), not to mention the "Fauteuil de Voltaire" at Musée Carnavalet signed Charles François Normand.
