Painting in very good condition in its original frame gilded with gold leaf of 89 x 70 cm (some slight chips restored).
Jean Benner was born in Mulhouse into a family of artists and was a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Georges Hébert. With his twin brother Emmanuel, also a painter, they made a long study trip to the largest cities in Italy in 1865. Close to Jean-Jacques Henner and receiving advice from Delacroix, Jean Benner exhibited at the Salon from 1857. Nowadays his works are present in many museums.
