Bronze statue depicting a young noblewoman in medieval times, holding her sleeping child. An Old French poem related to this scene appears in a cartouche on the base. The proposed edition was produced towards the end of the 19th century, based on the marble sculpture by Jean Gautherin listed and dated 1879. In perfect condition, the shaded brown patina is original. On the base, stamps of the Parisian foundry Barbedienne (Collas reduction), numbering, signature J. GAUTHERIN, and inked inscriptions under the statue in accordance with the publisher's identification method. Jean Gautherin was born in Ouroux (Nièvre) in 1841. Showing a talent for sculpture, he entered the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1864 and exhibited at the Salon the following year. In 1881, he was elected to the sculpture committee of the Société des Artistes Français. The artist's talent led to major commissions, and his works were exhibited in major national museums. Jean Gautherin was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1878.
