Japanese Kutani porcelain sleeping cat, Meiji period

Antique Japanese Porcelain sleeping cat, Japan, Kutani, Meiji period.
This Kutani porcelain cat, dating from the Meiji era, is an exquisite piece depicting a “nemuri neko” (sleeping or peaceful cat). Inspired by the famous wooden sculpture located at the Toshougu Shrine in Nikko, created by Hidari Jingoro, this work symbolizes serenity and peace.

The cat is crafted from fine white porcelain, with delicately applied golden patterns representing its fur. Its neck is adorned with an enamel scarf in red, accented with green and yellow motifs, to which a small bell is attached, adding a touch of realism and elegance. The details, such as the serene expression and the fluid lines of the body, reflect exceptional craftsmanship characteristic of Kutani porcelain from this period.

With dimensions of 8 x 18.5 x 13.5 cm, this piece is ideal as a collectible or decorative object. It perfectly captures the tranquil spirit of the nemuri neko, a symbol of peace and harmony in Japanese culture.
