An elegant pair of large Japanese candlesticks in dark red lacquered wood, dating from the Meiji period. They rest on a wide, hemispherical base, intricately carved to evoke the petals of the chrysanthemum, or kiku, a symbol of imperial power and longevity in Japan. A slender stem rises from this floral base, terminating in a bowl also shaped like a blooming chrysanthemum. At the top, a blackened metal support holds the candle, while two delicate foliate metal mounts, at the top and bottom of the stem, enrich the silhouette with subtly patinated, engraved motifs of stylized foliage.
These candlesticks were traditionally used in Buddhist temples or samurai residences, often arranged in pairs near the altar to accompany rituals or, sometimes, during the tea ceremony. The deep red hue of the lacquer is particularly rare for this type of piece, which is more commonly found in black. This powerful color captures the light and accentuates the silhouette, giving the piece a strong yet balanced sculptural presence. Their timeless design blends seamlessly into both classic and contemporary decor.
