Salammbô - Jean-Antoine Idrac (1849-1884)

Salammbô is a young Carthaginian priestess, the central character of Gustave Flaubert's famous novel published in 1862. This statue evokes the appearance of the young woman embraced by her python, a scene that inspired many artists of the time.
Gilded bronze statue produced between 1890 and 1900 (Art-Nouveau period) by the Parisian foundry Thiébaut Frères (stamp in cursive letters around the base), also bearing the signature of sculptor A. IDRAC. Mainly matte golden patina with shiny highlights, particularly fine chasing, very fine presentation. Salammbô was unveiled in 1881 (original plaster model), with a marble version sculpted the following year. The young Jean-Antoine Idrac began his training at the Beaux-arts in 1866, in the studio of Cavelier and Falguière. In 1869, he was awarded second prize in the Prix de Rome, and first prize in 1877.
