La Frileuse ou l'Hiver is a work by the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon created between 1783 and 1785, the original in marble is the property of the Fabre Museum in Montpellier. The gilded bronze statue offered for sale was produced by the great Parisian publishing house Barbedienne between 1875 and 1911 (reduction n°3), it is in very good condition, the gilding is original with a slight wear and tear. Signed Houdon on the base and stamp of the founder Barbedienne Paris.
Jean Antoine Houdon (1741/1828) was born in Versailles, a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and Lemoyne, he won a Prix de Rome in 1761, member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, this brilliant master of the eighteenth century acquired international fame in Russia as well as in America. Jean-Antoine Houdon bequeathed us the greatest masterpieces of the eighteenth century and is one of the personalities embodying the spirit of the Enlightenment.
