Bather with cat from Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887)

Gilded bronze statuette known as "Baigneuse au chat", after the work of sculptor Carrier-Belleuse. Produced around 1920, this edition comes from the Parisian firm Arthur Goldscheider, which was active during this period. Signature, cast stamp and numbering. Base in beige/brown veined onyx, very good overall condition. Total height: 30 cm.
Subject to be compared with "Psyché à la lampe" by the same artist. A marble example titled "the Dawn" is featured in Bryan Catley's Art-Deco reference work.
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was born in Anisy le Château in 1824. After arriving in Paris at the age of 13, he learned chasing and then goldsmithing. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts around 1840, and in 1851 was hired as a designer and drawing teacher at an English porcelain factory. Exhibiting in France at the Salon of 1857, his growing reputation earned him a reputation as one of the most brilliant sculptors of his time, and his works can be seen today on many national buildings.
