Marble (Carrara) and bronze bust with double gold and brown patina. Produced at the beginning of the 20th century (circa 1920) in very good condition according to its age (slight traces in the marble), signature and numbering on the bronze part. A similar model titled "Amour Cruel" is presented on p.211 in the reference work Art-Déco by Bryan Catley.
Its creator Léonard VanWeydeveld (known as Agathon) was born in Lille in 1841. A naturalized French citizen of Belgian origin, he exhibited at the Salon from 1868 and joined the Sociétés des Artistes français in 1887. A sculptor appreciated for his refined, elegant works, he took part in the Salon des Beaux-arts in 1897, won a silver medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition and a gold medal in 1900. This brilliant sculptor, representative of the artistic currents of his time, was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
