Pair of gilded wooden columns, Spain, 17th century

Pair of gilded wooden columns, Spain, 17th century.

Pair of monumental wall columns in finely carved resinous wood and gilded with leaf.
The circular shafts with wide fluting are embellished with stylized acanthus leaves and flower falls.
They are finished with smooth bases in the lower part and topped with their Corinthian capitals with double rows of acanthus in the upper part.

Very good condition, original gilding with small customary restorations.

Spain, Castile and Leon Region, Province of Burgos, mid-17th century.

Dimensions:

Height: 237cm; Diameter: 30cm
Height of the capitals: 26 cm

Columns with very similar shapes and decorations are visible in the churches of Castile and Leon, notably in Burgos, in the St Jacques chapel of the Sainte Marie cathedral.

Our opinion :

Many columns of this style have come down to us, but mostly of medium size (150/180 cm) because they come from small private chapels.
Our monumental columns come from the chapel of an important religious building - of the cathedral type - in the region of Burgos in Spain.
In addition to the large size and period gilding, they have retained their original capitals, which is particularly rare.
