At the end of the 18th century, the romantic movement developed a new interest in the representation of the landscape, and in particular winter landscapes. This new interest associated with the decline of religious paintings, gave meaning to landscapes, not as simple table background but as a table in its own right. From 1809, a particularly cold period in Europe, as well as the defeat of the Grand Imperial Army caught in the Russian winter of 1812, contributed to the development of this new artistic genre. The landscapes do not reproduce nature, but are at the origin of a dramatic effect, the artist using the play of greyish light of winter to create the favorable atmosphere and illustrate human reflection and emotions.
