Komainu or Guardian Lion-dogs. These were positioned inside or in front of a (mostly Shinto but also Buddhist) shrine or temple. Sometimes they were even placed in the inner shrine itself, invisible for the public. They form a pair (male with horn and female) one of which has the mouth open and the other closed thus forming the famous mystic syllable 'a-um' (or 'om') from the equally famous Buddhist mantra 'Om mani padme om' ('Jewel in the Lotus Flower'). Strong presence. Good size. Remains of red colour. Weathered, restorations. Ideal to chase the evil spirits from your home.
Dimensions (each): 55x47x25cm.
