White large 19th century marble bust of Madam Recamier, after J. Chinard (1756-1813)
Looking down timidly, Madame Recamier holds a veil over her chest. The sheath conceals and reveals both her breasts modestly. Sculptor Joseph Chinard cleverly compensated for the artificiality of the bust shape by extending the bust to mid-torso and covering the transition between the body and the pedestal with draperies, creating a work of surprising naturalism.
Dimensions: 74 x 32 x 30 cm, of which 12 cm is red marble base.
Weight: 46 ( bust) + 16 ( base) =62 kg
