17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
This charming little writing table in walnut, called ''à transformation'', has four sides, the edges of which are decorated with burr walnut reserves.
It rests on elegantly arched legs.
It transforms into a small desk fitted with a leather-covered writing desk, when this slides forward to release a tier opening with two drawers.
We are indeed, faced with a so-called “transformation” piece of furniture. These table models differed from ordinary tables. It is not a desk per se, but a so-called "writing table" which, in the middle of the 18th century, became an important element of women's furniture. The one we are presenting, like many of these tables, only reveals its function as a small desk once the slid-out shelf is pulled out forward and the step is uncovered.
These small tables were made to satisfy the passion for correspondence in the 18th century and fashionable merchants then deployed all their ingenuity to create these beautiful pieces of furniture.
