17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Exceptional suite of six seats composed of four large armchairs and two chairs with flat backs `` à la Reine '', in molded and carved walnut stamped Pierre Nogaret (1718 - 1771) Carpenter in seats. Master in 1745 in Lyon.
The flat violin-shaped backrests are topped with large “Rocaille” foliage which can also be found on the front rails.
The feet are arched and elegantly sculpted.
The attachment of the armrest console of the armchairs is controlled by the use of "coup de fouet" which connects curves and counter-curves to the belt. The armrests reveal a charming shell pattern at their end.
The rigorous sense of proportion, the balance of forms, the quality of the sculptures, the depth of the moldings, the famous ''coup de fouet'' of the consoles clearly underline the realization of these six seats by Pierre Nogaret.
To complete this authenticity, all six seats bear the "NOGARET A LYON" stamp with this singular feature of the 'Y' leg which folds to the left. The location of the stamp is on the rear cross member of their belt as was strictly customary on the padded flat-back seats of this famous Lyonnais carpenter.
Born in Paris, Pierre Nogaret would have completed his apprenticeship there before coming to settle in Lyon in 1743. Was he influenced by the works of the two great initiators, Tilliard and Cresson? This would explain the presence in Nogaret's production of a rigorous sense of proportions and the balance of forms, as well as of a rather exceptional quality of sculpture.
