17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Charming sewing box called "work box" made of straw marquetry with bright colors.
It has a beautiful decor on all sides: views of cities, flowers, garlands of foliage, friezes of diamonds ...
The cover represents a rural panorama drawing in the foreground fields, a stream, and in the background a pretty town with several bell towers.
Inside there is a mirror, two needle sticks and four compartments with lids which are also decorated with straw marquetry on each side. The back of the central locker is thus decorated with two lovers sitting in a garden.
Very good condition (some lacks)
Straw marquetry
Beginning of the 19th century
Historical annecdote:
Formerly considered "the gold of the poor", rye straw was dried and dyed, then split in half and glued on its matt side. Then it was then flattened with a "folder" on a support (wood, metal, glass ...)
