A Gilt-brass box
By Michel Mann (active in Augsburg and Nuremberg, died circa 1630)
South Germany, circa 1600
The box is engraved with allegories of the Four Seasons identified as VER, AESTAS, AVTVMVNS, HYEMS (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter).
The bottom is decorated with a leaping unicorn; the side with fruit trophies and the cover is showing a gentleman greeting a lady.
The lock cover signed MICHEL MANN.
Gilt brass, hinged lid, wrought iron lock mechanism with 4 bolts, partly blued.
Condition:
Key added later, two small screws missing on a side at the bottom.
At least two boxes from Michel Mann are known showing engraved allegories of the Four Seasons from the same model. One is preserved in the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille (Paul Engrand Coll.) and the other in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (inv. 83.1.148).
