Louis XV Canned Set (2 Armchairs & 4 Chairs) - Signed of JB Gourdin
Jean-Baptiste Gourdin (1723-1781), Master March 26, 1748 comes from one of the largest and most prestigious seat makers families in Paris. He is the son of Jean Gourdin (Père Gourdin) and the brother of Michel Gourdin, both famous seat makers. Jean Baptiste Gourdin was trained by his father Jean and by the famous sculptor Toussaint Foliot. He worked for the Prince de Soubise, Duke of Rohan, but also the Marquis de Bellevaux but his most illustrious client is undoubtedly the Dauphine Marie-Antoinette when she moved to Versailles.
JB Gourdin Seats are in the greatest museums (Louvre Museum, Museums of Decorative Arts in Paris, Museum of Decorative Arts of Lyon).
Everything is elegant and exquisitely tasteful in these seats: sculpture, curves, counter-curves, correct proportions. The 6 seats are in very good condition. We made the cushions renewed with a lovely raspberry-colored chinoiserie silk that is well matching to the almond green of the lacquer.
