Claude Louis Burgat (1717-1782), a Parisian carpenter received his master's degree in 1744, and devoted himself to the manufacture of seat woods. He set up shop on rue de Cléry and then rue Feydeau, and is best known for his Louis XV chairs. Virtually all his work is of the highest quality. The sculpture of his seats is deep and incisive, as are the moldings, with their powerful yet supple lines. Some of his chairs can be found in Paris, at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée Carnavalet, as well as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier français du XVIIIème siècle, Paris, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, 2008, p. 135).
