A rare and small Louis XIV ormulu-mounted tortoiseshell and engraved brass Boulle marquetry bureau Mazarin
Late 17th century
Elaborately inlaid with caryatides, sphinxes, vases, and animals within scrolling foliate borders, the rectangular moulded top above a central drawer and cupboard door, flanked to each side by three bombé-shaped drawers, on height square tapering legs joined by two X-shaped stretchers, on ball feet.
The overall decoration is directly inspired by Jean BERAIN’s style of decoration of idiosyncratic fantasy made of characters of the commedia dell’arte, and whimsical canopies supported by some caryatids and surrounded by arabesques, scrolling foliages, geometrical forms and human figures.
