Ashford black marbleIn reality, this is a limestone of fine density, which, after polishing, possesses undeniable decorative qualities. Quarries have been exploited since the late 16th century, mainly for architectural elements. It wasn't until the middle of the 18th century, with the spread of the “Grand Tour” among the upper classes of society, that small objects imitating Roman and Florentine production were marketed.
