Satsuma Earthenware Bottle. Meiji Period Japan.
Earthenware bottle covered with a finely crackled cream-colored glaze, decorated with figures in reserves against a background of 1000 flowers and 1000 butterflies, enameled and gold. Elegant and rare form. Note that some details are in silver, a metal rarely used by Satsuma artists, because the firing of silver nitrate is more uncertain than that of gold, the metal being unstable at high temperatures, and it blackens over time, which was prohibitive for some artists and sublime for others. Below, three beautiful marks of the artist(s), two carefully glazed, the third incised into the clay, which is also rarely found on Satsuma earthenware. Was this the mark of a potter particularly skilled at achieving such a difficult shape on the wheel? We haven't taken the time to research these artists; the quality of the work is sufficient as a criterion for our assessment, but we can do so upon request.
Height: 148mm Diameter: 160mm Japon late 19°century. Probably Kyoto kilns.
Perfect condition.
