Offered by Anne Besnard
This handsome and elegant solid walnut game table, with its square, full-sided top, was designed to accommodate four players. Each crosspiece of the waistband is carved in the center with a shell bordered on either side by a small scroll and topped by a drawer. The curved uprights are adorned at the top with a fleuron surmounted by a shell, and at the bottom with a doe's foot carved with an acanthus leaf. The top is trimmed with brown leather and bordered by a flat strip forming a bowl. Each corner is embellished with a pull to hold a torch for lighting the game. This piece of furniture, intended for the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie, is typical of Lyon cabinetmakers in the first half of the 18th century. In excellent condition, it has nevertheless undergone minor repairs here and there, and the leather is later.
