After waging war in Italy, King Francis I quickly set about having the most beautiful ornamental works carried out in France by Italian artists.
The School of Fontainebleau with Rosso Fiorentino known as Le Rosso, a student of Raphael and Le Primatice who created the Galerie François Ier, laid the foundations of the decorative arts from beyond the mountains. The fabulous sculptural composition in stucco surrounding the central frescoes soon served as a model.
Here we find a languid nymph, a mirror in her hand, in a landscape bordered by trees with a citadel in the background. She takes her place in a cartouche framed by Bellifontain cut-out leathers and corner fleurons, between two accosting chimeras.
