The Virgin with the holds the Christ on the knees of his mother who looks at Christ with an expression combining nobility and simplicity.
The naked child faces the spectator, arms outstretched, Maria holds both hands.
Several very similar variants of this depiction by Jan Mabuse Gossaerts are known. The present painting was created in the second half of the 16th century in his workshop by one of his followers.
