European Works of Art from the Middle Ages to the XVIIIth century
This interesting composition depicts the entombment of Christ, gathering ten characters surrounding the dead body of the prophet in a cave setting, with Mount Golgotha and its crosses in the background. Among those present, Nicodemus is carrying Jesus legs, Joseph of Arimathea is helping carrying Christ on the background, while Maria Magdalene is kneeling on the left side; the Virgin Mary stands praying on the background and Saint John the Evangelist is featured wearing a beautiful red tunica, with great presence closing the composition on the left side of the scene.
Two paintings with the same composition have been recently sold in the art market, both attributed to a follower of Federico Zuccaro (1542 - 1609); the painting shows indeed a strong Venetian late Renaissance characteristics, although the possible intervention of a Flemish hand could be contemplated.
