Pair of Jugendstil panels, Georg Klimt (1867 – 1931), ca. 1904
The pair of panels “Griffins” has an exciting art-historical context, as the design goes back to the famous “Kaiserkassette”. This was commissioned from Otto Czeschka by the Skoda-Werke on the occasion of Emperor Franz-Josef I. visit and realized by the Wiener Werkstätte. Czeschka in turn commissioned Georg Klimt to execute the reliefs according to his designs. Georg Klimt is likely to have taken up a motif from this prestigious commission once again.
