Bronze of the nineteenth century (old cast iron), edited after the model presented by Emmanuel Frémiet at the Salon of 1863. It has a long title: "The centaur Tereus (probably Therea) carrying to his lair, alive and struggling bears caught in the mountains of the Hemus". This mythological scene of rare intensity shows the talent of this sculptor who was particularly brilliant in the representation of animal groups, equestrian statues and great historical figures. Very good state of preservation, original patina, Frémiet signature on the base.
Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) was born in Paris, one of the greatest French sculptors of the nineteenth century, a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and the State entrusted him with numerous commissions. His sculptures are present in the most famous museums and monuments in France. In 1900, he was named Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour.
