Portrait of a woman in medieval costume by Edgard Maxence, pencil, charcoal and chalk on paper.
A student of Gustave Moreau at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Maxence exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1894. He took part in the Salons de la Rose Croix organized by Sâr Péladan, making him part of the Symbolist movement.
Inspired by pre-Raphaelism, he often used medieval imagery in his work, as in this drawing, where the lady with the hennin, book in hand, seems to be meditating on her reading.
