These boxes, very fashionable in the 17th century, in Alsace, Switzerland and in the Rhine valley, were offered by the young man to his bride before the wedding, and are commonly called courtesy boxes. This rare copy presents an elaborate decoration of flowers intertwined inspired by the Millefleur tapestries of the Middle Ages, the top is bordered by a frieze of simulated feathers, in the center the polychromy incorporates a quality lady dressed in a large coat, a wrought iron handle allows handling and storage. Beech is used here, the assembly is done using metal points, the lid pivots on two wooden axes, beautiful lock and hinges. Period 1st half 17th century. Some wear of the polychromy should be noted. Old key but probably replaced in the 19th century. Collector's item in its original form. beautiful patina.
