Old and Alsatian furniture and paintings
A rare bronze, two women dance in jubilation, their style and movement drawing on the beginnings of the Art Deco movement, joy and sensuality emanating from the movement captured, they are celebrating, but they are holding a severed head!
By rotating the work, which is reversible, the head seen from the front is less clear and seems to simulate a bunch of grapes, hence the ambivalence of the message: victory and celebration. The artist may have sought his inspiration in the Old Testament and the “Judith and Holofernes” episode, to evoke the liberation of a people, and is probably referring to the end of the long war of 14-18 and the victory over the German enemy, but it is also the emancipation of women that is being heralded and that will develop under the Art Deco period.
Beautiful patina. Signed on the terrace M.Bouraine and dated 1918.
