17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Small collector’s cabinet inlaid with different species of wood decorated with landscapes of trees, houses, architectural elements, plant ornaments and an animal, probably a fox in the foreground of the central leaf. This opens onto a large locker topped with a small drawer behind which a secret compartment is hidden.
This cabinet also opens on the front with six drawers and on the top with a flap revealing a large locker behind the three upper trompe-l'oeil drawers.
Designed to adorn the German Kunstkammer (chamber of arts or cabinet of curiosities), these rare collector's cabinets are typical of the production of southern Germany and more particularly of Augsburg. They were used to store and display collected art objects.
