17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Our four figures, carved from linden, represent the allegory of the four seasons.
Each allegory is embodied by a young woman wearing a draped dress belted under the bust, emphasizing the grace of their bodies.
They are accompanied by a child playing with the characteristic attribute of their seasons.
Spring carries a flowery basket in her right hand. The floral abundance highlights the rebirth of plants in this season, the most fertile of the year.
Summer holds a large sheaf of wheat, a symbol of peace, abundance, and wealth.
While Autumn balances her cherub on a vine bearing large bunches of grapes, referencing the grape harvest and the bounty of the harvest.
Winter is symbolized by the hooded child, his hands warmly covered in a muff. These four statuettes are a charming testament to the expertise of 18th-century Italian image-makers.
