Diana the huntress and a Handmaid tempted by Satyrs in the guise of innocent Putti, terracotta sculpture, Paris, 19th century
Measurements: 44x43x31cm
Of particular beauty and refinement is this allegorical scene in terracotta inserted in the original gilded wooden base where Diana the Huntress and a Handmaid are portrayed as they pose attentively in the act of playing with three cheering Putti…but with legs covered in thick hair than the one in close-up shows the true nature of the same ... is a Faun!
The sculpture is therefore legible as an allegory of chastity and lust that play with each other and try to overwhelm themselves even using deception.
The sculpture is signed Charles Joseph Lenoir, Paris 1844- Rennes 1899
