Young woman represented naked and curled up on a drape, seeming to doze her head resting on her right arm. Bronze statuette, produced around 1850 by the Parisian founder Susse frères, James Pradier's publisher at that time and most likely contemporary to its author. Very nice state of presentation according to its age, original brown patina. Signature J. PRADIER on the base, dated 184-(2) and stamp of the founder.
Of parents of Toulouse origin, Jean-Jacques (said) James Pradier was born in Geneva, showing a certain aptitude in drawing, James Pradier arrived in Paris in 1807 and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1808. In 1813 he won a Prix de Rome for sculpture and spent four years at the Villa Medici. On his return, with a growing notoriety, his works were exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1819. Having become one of the most brilliant sculptors of his generation, nowadays his works are present on the most important national monuments.
