17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Virgin and Child in Majesty seated in a frontal position presenting the naked Child Jesus, seated on her right knee.
Marie is wearing a belted dress with a rounded neckline. A long supple veil forming a coat gently envelopes her shoulders. The clothes are treated in wide, hectic folds falling to the floor.
His tenderly bent face displays a slight smile. She presents herself as maternal and reassuring, as evidenced by her hand holding the Child's little foot.
The position of the Child on the side is no longer in such a hieratic or frontal posture inherited from previous centuries. He even seems animated by a desire to move, thus giving the sculpture a realistic aspect.
This charming group, sculpted in polychrome and gilded low relief, is composed in a delicate and graceful style from which a gentle expression of benevolence emanates.
