This astonishing and rare object of the Grand Tour reproduces an Athenian lamp base carrying 3 oil lamps.
A large black and blood-red marble plinth supports the lamp base.
The base is on three lion's legs, three fluted uprights support a gadrooned basin, between these uprights we discover a very archaic statue of Hermes on a complex base.
The upper circular umbilical plate is surrounded by three deer slaughter and bears three storks holding moving snakes in their beaks.
These snakes are the gallows of three oil lamps, each one different in shape with a cover like a statue of Hermes, a rat, a swan.
The objects of the Grand Tour or the Tour du Chevalier reproduced the successive remarkable archaeological discoveries and allowed the “Knights” to bring back the ancient spirit of their humanities. Ancient beauty or its specificity took precedence over authenticity, for example Francois I having the statue of the Laocoon group belonging to Leon X reproduced.
In this case, this archaic and ornamented light in a varied and loaded way, we will think of the antique bronze furniture from the Bardo museum in Tunis, there are, for example, bronze divans adorned with protome horse heads.
