17th & 18th centuries Furniture and Statuary
Bas relief from the 17th century, carved on oak, representing Christ healing the blind Bartimaeus.
We will notice the elaborate work of the very beautiful draperies as well as the expressions of the faces treated with finesse.
Beautiful illustration also of gracefully wavy hair and beards.
In the Gospels, Bartimaeus, whose name means "son of Timaeus" in Aramaic, is the name of the blind man healed by Jesus at the entrance to Jericho. This episode exists in all three Synoptic Gospels (Mark, Matthew, and Luke), but the name Bartimaeus only appears in Mark.
This episode can be read as a parable of finding faith (trust).
Before the passage of Jesus, Bartimaeus is blind and begs sitting by the side of the road, ignored and snubbed by all. His confidence in Jesus makes him a man who has become a “seer”, a man standing, walking, following Jesus.
