Aman-Jean was still to become one of the most sought after pastelist when he produced this symbolist pastel in the early to mid 1890, at a time when he was close to the symbolists and to the poet Verlaine.
In the same period, it painted Saint-Julien l'hospitalier (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne) not an altogether convincing take on Catholic symbolism (associated with the Rose+Croix), this one shows he was starting to find his way.
