Born in Burgundy, Juan de Borgoña introduced the Italian art of the Quattrocento to the kingdom of Castile.
His archaic style is recognisable by the use of a tonal palette dominated by subtly contrasting reds and greens. The treatment of the folds, particularly structured, and the softness of his faces are characteristic of his work. His compositions can be seen in Spain, notably in Toledo Cathedral.
