This superb table depicting the Virgin holding up the Child and St. John is a typical example of Lombard Renaissance painting of clearly Leonardesque origin.
In fact, with his arrival in Milan towards the end of the 15th century, the great genius of Leonardo contributed decisively to the rebirth of painting in Lombardy, influencing a large group of artists with his unmistakable style.
Among the most valid followers of his pictorial creed is certainly his pupil Giovan Pietro Rizzoli known as Giampietrino who with some of his works equaled the supreme Master, perfectly grasping the characteristic nuances of his characters full of mystery and veiled esotericism.
Our table embodies all the peculiarities of his works, best expressing the very fine taste of this group of authors from the Leonardesque school.
The very elegant posture of the Virgin and the almost ambiguous game of the two kissing children, also expressed in Nordic works, are a subject already elaborated by Rizzoli and evidently the fruit of a painter from his entourage.
