The painter to whom we attribute the painting in our study is Henri Millot. He was one of the main pupils of the famous painter Nicolas de Largillière (1656-1746). He lived in Paris, then traveled to Strasbourg and the Palatinate. He became the official painter of the court of the Two Bridges, and also painted portraits of Duke Gustavus Samuel Leopold, of his second wife, and of Christian III, Duke of Birkenfeld-Bischweiler. Returning to Strasbourg around 1730, he made several portraits, including that of Marie-Anne de Klinglin, Maréchale du Bourg. He was probably in Paris in the 1730s and exhibited "two painted portraits" at the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1756.
