Offered by La Crédence
Large armchair with uprights and square-section front legs, in walnut, with " a certosina" ornamentation. Italy, circa 1830.
The back is with two wide bands, carved with volutes, a pattern repeated in the bandeau under the seat. The armrests are supported by two baluster columns.
The uprights end in two men's heads included in two scrolls.
All the visible parts of the front, including the inside of the back legs are decorated "a certosina", a kind of mosaic created with pieces of wood, mother-of-pearl, bone or ivory.
This technique, widely used during the Italian Renaissance, is named after the convent of Certosa, near Pavia, where it was first used to decorate an altarpiece.
