Louis XV Commode, Eastern France

Louis XV period Commode curved front and sides, veneered with rosewood, violet wood, sycamore, green tinted boxwood and fruitwood. Opening to two drawers without crossbar, this chest of drawers has a marble top. A marquetry of cubes constitutes the bottom of the sides and the front. A band frames each panel of cubes. On the front, a cartouche of interlacing stands out from the background and includes an inlaid decoration of a music trophy decorated with flowers and ribbons. The ornamentation of this chest of drawers plays on the contrasts of the wood species.
The curved shape of the case, the arched feet and the gilded bronze trim are in the rocaille style. The curves, the openwork and asymmetrical bronzes are very fashionable under Louis XV.

The assembly as well as the use of marquetry of cubes and native woods recall the work of quality cabinetmakers, active in the provinces, Franche-Comté or Dauphiné.
