c. 1895-1905, Chabas captures here the very essence of Symbolism: a solitary, introspective female figure, drawn with a supple, vibrant line. The tinted paper, animated by quick hatching and touches of white, attests to his academic training under Bouguereau, while the dreamy pose reflects his spiritual quest. The attribution is supported by this characteristic graphic handwriting, by direct parallels with his studies for the Lyon-Perrache station, and by the period cartouche bearing his name. A rare drawing—both intimate and emblematic—ideal for launching or enriching a Symbolist collection.
