A finely chased and gilded bronze thermometer resting on an architectural base, framed by a pair of columns with Corinthian capitals holding two covered pots. The dial is signed “L'Ingénieur Chevalier, opticien du roi, paris 1763”.

This is most likely Louis-Vincent Chevalier (1734-1804), the King's optician. He set up business in 1760 at 31, quai de l'horloge in Paris. Louis-Vincent Chevalier had three sons who also worked as opticians: Louis Chevalier, Nicolas Marie Chevalier and Jacque Louis Vincent Chevalier, who succeeded him on his death.
