This exquisite pair of Empire candlesticks is crafted from finely gilded and patinated bronze. The design features neoclassical influences, with fluted columns, intricate decorative details, and elegant female figures with Greco-Roman inspiration. The craftsmanship reflects the refinement and grandeur typical of the early 19th century.
A remarkable detail is the inscription found on the base of one candlestick, which reads:
“Presented to The Rev. The Honorable Thomas Monson, by his niece Sarah, widow of John, 3rd Lord Monson, on her marriage to the 5th Earl of Warwick, 21st Oct. 1816.”
This inscription adds historical significance, suggesting that the candlesticks were a wedding gift commemorating the marriage of Sarah Monson to the Earl of Warwick in 1816.
A true collector’s piece, these candlesticks represent both artistic elegance and a rich historical narrative.
