This monumental pair of vases was made in Europe towards the end of the 19th century in an Oriental style. Made entirely of black lacquered wood, the vases are finely decorated with paintings in polychrome lacquer and gilding, reminiscent of the cloisonné technique. The vases are made in two separable parts: square bases with curved profiles and arched, curved legs, supporting the vases. These consist of three inseparable portions. The lower portion is truncated pyramid-shaped, with smooth sides that widen towards the bottom, the middle portion is inverted, and the upper portion, with a square section, follows a trumpet shape that narrows in the center and flares outwards at the top. Each side of each section, including the bases, is decorated with Oriental-inspired motifs: geometric and phytomorphic designs, landscapes, figures, and birds, all influenced by the distinctive production of Japan and China, which became very popular in Europe starting from the 18th century.
The two vases are highly decorative due to their color scheme and considerable size. They can be placed in various settings, from entrances to salons, studies, and bedrooms, where they will bring the timeless charm of the Orient. They can also be used as planters, with the addition of a metal insert.
There are a few small areas of lacquer loss, for which we can arrange a restoration.
