Box with compartments (Kobako). Solid gold flowers. Nashiji background. Japan, early Edo period, circa 1700.
Rare box with 3 compartments in lacquered wood from the early Edo period, late 17th century, early 18th century. Decorated with chrysanthemums in a landscape. Some flowers are inlaid in solid gold, which is very rare. The decoration is in lacquer in slight relief (takamaki-e) powdered with gold and silver on an aventurine background (nashiji). Details in mosaic of gold squares (Kirikane). The silver is heavily oxidized and has turned grayish black as on all very old lacquers. On the base compartment we can see an excellent old Japanese restoration which covers what was a crack, the wood having shrunk over the centuries. We can still see this repair made with Urushi, technically identical to the initial work, because the metal powders are not as oxidized and are lighter. It is exceptional to find such a large box, of this quality, inlaid with solid gold patterns and from this period.
Height: 185 mm Diameter: 150 mm
Very good condition for a three-hundred-year-old lacquer. The lower compartment is split on one side and restored on the other. On the lid there is a large chip, clearly visible in the photo.
Early Edo period, late 17th-early 18th century.
No signature, which is usual for lacquers from these early periods. Signatures on almost all lacquers, even those of poor quality, will only appear in the 19th century to satisfy a tourist guests.
